The standard audio cassette still used today was never intended for wide usage, but instead was originally developed in 1962 for use in dictation machines.
Its compact size, reliability, low manufacturing costs, and Hi-Fi stereo capability ultimately led to wide market acceptance, however. This format allowed 30 or 45 minutes of stereo music per side, until longer tapes became available. The original tapes were Ferrite (Fe2O3), but later, Chromium Dioxide (CrO2) and other formulations of metal particles were used in order to improve sound quality. Later machines employed various noise reduction technologies, though Dolby became the most popular by far.
Cassettes and related equipment will probably be manufactured a few more years, after which the fate of the audio cassette will likely be similar to that of vinyl records - they will finally be overthrown by digital media.
