A Soldier Inspires Memories of Fallen Heroes
Our men and women in the military commit their lives to protect and serve our nation. In some cases, many go above and beyond the call of duty for their country. In this instance, one soldier named Zachariah Fike is reuniting families of fallen veterans with keepsakes of their loved ones.
His mission began with a Christmas gift from his mother, a Purple Heart she obtained at an antique shop with a soldier’s name engraved within. Zachariah received his own Purple Heart Medal in September 2010 while he was on tour in Afghanistan. Knowing the significance and importance of this medal, Fike wanted to return the medal to the veteran’s family.
Fike did some online research and located a sister of the Purple Heart owner. He contacted Adeline, living in New Jersey, to notify her that he had her brother’s medal. While skeptical, Adeline sensed his genuine kindness and drove 8 hours to meet the young man. To her surprise, the medal was contained in the same box as when she last saw it, many many years ago. Adeline was extremely grateful for his gesture, as he had returned an irreplaceable family heirloom.
Since his first experience with Adeline, Zachariah was inspired and continued to track down lost medals to return them to their rightful owners and their families. Fike has successfully reunited 5 additional medals with their families, bringing joy and closure to many.
Zachariah’s actions are a true inspiration to us all. Our memories are eternal, but sometimes it is keepsakes like these that help keep those memories alive. He has given these families new hope in humanity and reunited them with the memories of their fallen heroes.
Preserve your memories and keepsakes from your family history. Cherish their remembrance and relive the happy times over and over again.
