Information about 16mm film reels

"Sixteen millimeter" reel-to-reel film is the oldest consumer video format. It was introduced in 1923. From then 16mm was quickly adopted for use in professional news reporting, corporate and educational films, and other uses, but the home movie market switched to even less expensive 8mm film. Today, most of these uses have been taken over by video, and 16mm film is used primarily by budget-conscious independent filmmakers.

Most common size of reel is 4" that can hold up to 100 feet of film which is approximately 5 minutes of video.

5" - 200 feet of film;
7" - 400 feet;
10" - 800 feet;
12" - 1200 feet;
13" - 1600 feet;
14" - 2000 feet.
